Gypsy is a true story – based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous stripstease artist – with the focus on the ultimate "stage mom" Rose. With music written by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Gypsy has been hailed as one of the best musicals of all times, garnering numerous Tony Awards over the years for the original production as well as the revivals.
Stars have yearned to play the lead part of Rose and everyone from Ethel Merman to Bernadette Peters have performed this coveted part on Broadway, and Tyne Daly and Patti Lupone captured the Tony for Best Actress for their portrayal.
Neil Simon molds the stories of Anton Chekhov into exquisitely timed, often hilarious theatre, dramatizing seven stories which incorporate a wide variety of characters--a governess, a lady of the night, a blustering general, a wild woman with a nervous disorder, a roué flirting with a new bride, a man who earns money by "drowning," and an actress. The stories, adapted for the stage, are filled with dry humor, surprise endings, and clever common people in confrontations with "superiors," ending in absurdities. "The Writer," obviously Chekhov, who himself was a "good doctor," acts as narrator and serves to connect the various scenes.
Grease will be the word for Summer Place Theatre this summer as it brings the popular musical back to its original state – Illinois, where it was first performed in 1971 at the old Kingston Mine Theatre. Perfomers will sing, dance in this highly energetic, popular musical based in the 50’s, bringing us the love-struck teens Sandy and Danny – two young adults from “different cliques.” When Grease closed its run on Broadway in 1980, its 3,388-performance run was the longest yet in Broadway history – and today stands as the 13th longest-running show! Join us for an evening of fun - welcome back to the 50's! The show will be directed by Matt Whalen and choreographed by Shawn Quinlan.
